The Manufacturer Difference

Why Accountability Starts Before Your Roof Is Built

Not all roof truss suppliers are equal. The questions below are ones every homeowner and contractor should ask — and that a genuine manufacturer can answer without hesitation.

What causes roof trusses to sag or deflect after installation?

Roof truss deflection is almost always the result of a failure at the design or manufacturing stage. The most common causes: under-designed member sizes for the actual tile or wind load; incorrect timber stress grade — SANS 10163 requires S5, S7 or machine-stress-graded timber, and substituting lower grades causes creep under sustained load; undersized or incorrectly placed connector plates; trusses erected at wider spacing than designed; missing permanent bracing required under SANS 10243; and designing to sheeting loads when concrete tiles (approximately 55 kg/m²) were specified. When an accredited manufacturer supplies trusses with full engineering documentation, the cause can be identified and corrected. When sourced through an agent from an unverified fabricator, engineering records are typically absent — making diagnosis and accountability impossible.

What is the difference between a roof truss manufacturer and an agent or broker?

A manufacturer designs, engineers and fabricates in its own accredited factory — and carries direct liability when something goes wrong. An agent or broker does not manufacture anything. They source from whichever fabricator is cheapest at the time. You have no visibility into who designed your trusses, whether SANS-compliant drawings exist, or whether any accreditation was held. When failure occurs, the agent blames the fabricator and the fabricator disputes liability — leaving you with a structural defect and no clear recourse. Isocraft Truss is a direct manufacturer. Every set of trusses carries full MiTek engineering documentation, SANS-compliant structural drawings and our ITC SA Category A certification. One accountable party — from design to installation.

My roof trusses are sagging or deflecting — what should I do?

Act immediately — progressive deflection can accelerate to structural failure. Step 1: Document everything — photograph all defects and gather your quote, invoice, delivery note and any drawings. No engineering drawings is itself a serious red flag. Step 2: Appoint a registered Pr Eng to inspect and issue a written report — this is the foundation of any legal claim. Step 3: Establish accountability. An accredited manufacturer with documentation gives you a clear legal path. An agent sourcing from an unaccredited fabricator makes liability very difficult to establish. Step 4: If the supplier is an ITC SA member, lodge a formal complaint — ITC SA can compel remediation. Suppliers with no accreditation have no such accountability body.

Five questions to ask any roof truss supplier before placing an order

  1. Are you a direct manufacturer or a broker? A manufacturer carries direct liability. A broker does not.
  2. Do you hold ITC SA Category A Fabricator Membership? The highest independently audited certification in SA — requires factory inspection, quality audit and verified design capability.
  3. Do you produce SANS 10160-compliant engineering drawings? Full working drawings are issued upon signed order and design fee payment — your legal record of what was engineered and built.
  4. Are you a MiTek Authorised Partner? Confirms certified software, genuine connector plates and trained personnel — not improvised substitutes.
  5. Who carries engineering liability if trusses deflect after installation? A confident manufacturer answers this clearly and in writing. If the supplier avoids it — that is your answer.

Isocraft Truss answers yes to all five.

How do I verify that a roof truss supplier is a genuine accredited manufacturer?

Any supplier can claim to be a manufacturer. Here is how to verify it before you commit:

  • Check the ITC SA member register — visit itcsa.org.za and confirm the supplier holds a current Certificate of Competence. Isocraft Truss: COC/849/MIT — Category A
  • Verify MiTek partnership — MiTek publishes its authorised partners. An agent cannot hold MiTek authorisation.
  • Confirm CIPC registration — search cipc.co.za for the registered company. Isocraft Truss: Reg. 2015/106235/07
  • Confirm full working drawings are issued upon signed order — a genuine manufacturer provides SANS 10160-compliant engineering drawings on signed order and design fee payment. An agent typically cannot produce compliant drawings at all.
  • Visit the factory — a genuine manufacturer welcomes this. Isocraft Truss: 122 Watt Road, Pretoria Industrial — active production floor, open to verified site visits.

We welcome verification. If your current supplier cannot satisfy these checks — you have your answer.

What is the real danger of site-made or under-engineered roof trusses?

Roof trusses built on site by unqualified erectors using rule-of-thumb measurements — without structural engineering calculations, certified software, SANS 10160 compliance, ITC SA oversight or MiTek connector plates — are not roof trusses in any engineering sense. They are timber assemblies. And they will behave accordingly.

An under-engineered roof does not fail on a schedule. It fails when the load exceeds what rule-of-thumb could not calculate. That can be months after installation. It can be days. The failure pattern is predictable: deflection first, which opens gaps in the roof covering; then water ingress; then accelerated timber decay; then connector failure; then structural collapse. Every person living or working under that roof is at risk.

The attraction — always — is price. A site-made assembly is cheaper because engineering was skipped. No structural designer. No certified software. No ITC SA audit. No quality-controlled manufacturing. The saving is real. So is what it costs you later. Do your due diligence. Ask the right questions before you commit.

As we say in South Africa: "Die koop is deur koop." The cheap purchase ends up costing more than the right one ever would. Isocraft Truss manufactures every truss in a certified factory, to SANS 10160, under ITC SA Category A accreditation — no rule of thumb, no on-site fabrication, no compromises.

What is the risk when a supplier gives you a subcontractor's number instead of their own installation team?

When a supplier ends their accountability at the factory gate and hands you a third-party erector's contact details, they have left you between two parties who share no accountability to each other. If the trusses do not fit — the supplier says it is an installation problem. If the erector installs incorrectly — the erector says the trusses are wrong. Your project stalls. Neither party funds the resolution. You do.

Isocraft Truss operates an in-house installation team. The same company that designed and manufactured your trusses puts them up. If something needs attention — one phone call resolves it. No subcontractor to chase. No two parties pointing fingers while your slab sits exposed.

End-to-end accountability is not a marketing phrase. It is a phone number that answers.

Another supplier told me Isocraft's roof design is not possible. What does this mean?

It almost certainly means that supplier lacks the engineering capability to execute the design — not that the design is structurally invalid. Complex roof geometries, unusual spans, non-standard pitches and compound hip configurations are entirely achievable when designed using professional structural engineering software by a qualified designer, and manufactured by an ITC SA Category A certified fabricator. An unaccredited supplier without certified software, without a qualified structural designer and without the production capacity for complex work will encounter designs they cannot replicate. That is a limitation of their process — not a flaw in the engineering.

Isocraft Truss designs are produced by our Senior Structural Designer using MiTek engineering software to full SANS 10160 compliance. Every design is structurally justified by calculation — not by opinion or rule of thumb.

If a supplier tells you our design is impossible, ask them one question: "Which SANS standard are you applying, and can you show me the calculation?" If they cannot answer that — you have your answer.

How much do roof trusses cost in South Africa?

Roof truss pricing depends on span, pitch, design complexity and quantity required. Isocraft Truss provides free, no-obligation quotes tailored to your specific project. Call 012 386 6351 or email office@isocraft-truss.co.za for a detailed quotation.

Do you offer roof truss installation in Pretoria and Gauteng?

Yes. Isocraft Truss provides a complete end-to-end service — structural design, precision manufacturing, site delivery and professional installation. We serve Pretoria, Centurion, Midrand, Johannesburg and all surrounding areas throughout Gauteng.

What is a MiTek roof truss?

MiTek is a global leader in structural connector plate technology. As a MiTek Authorised Partner, Isocraft Truss uses MiTek engineering software and galvanised connector plates to manufacture roof trusses to exact structural specifications, ensuring compliance with South African building standards.

What is the difference between timber and lightweight steel roof trusses?

Timber roof trusses are lighter, easier to handle and ideal for standard residential spans. Lightweight steel trusses offer greater spans, superior fire resistance and suit commercial, industrial and large-span applications. Isocraft Truss manufactures both types and will recommend the best solution for your project and budget.

How long does it take to manufacture roof trusses?

Standard lead time at Isocraft Truss is typically 5 to 10 business days from approved drawings, depending on project size and current production schedule. We work closely with contractors to meet site programme deadlines.

Is Isocraft Truss a Level 1 BBBEE company?

Yes. Isocraft Truss (Pty) Ltd is a Level 1 BBBEE Contributor, making us the preferred procurement choice for government projects, public sector contracts and developers with BBBEE compliance requirements in South Africa.

What is a roof truss and how does it work?

A roof truss is a pre-engineered structural framework of timber or steel members, designed to span the width of a building and support the roof covering. Trusses are manufactured off-site to precise specifications, then delivered and erected on the building's wall plate. Compared to traditional cut rafters, trusses are faster to install, more structurally consistent and typically more cost-effective for spans over 5 metres.

What does ITC SA Category A Fabricator certification mean?

The Institute for Timber Construction South Africa (ITC-SA) is the industry body that sets standards for timber roof truss fabrication. Category A is the highest fabricator grade — it requires an independent audit of the factory, production processes, quality controls and structural design capability. Isocraft Truss holds ITC-SA Category A Fabricator Membership (COC/849/MIT), confirming that every truss we manufacture meets the highest independently verified standards in the South African industry.

Do you supply roof trusses to building contractors?

Yes. Isocraft Truss works closely with building contractors, principal contractors, quantity surveyors and project managers on both residential and commercial projects. We provide SANS-compliant structural drawings, precise manufacturing and on-site delivery co-ordinated around your construction programme. Contractors benefit from fast turnaround, consistent quality and a single point of accountability from design through to installation.

There is no standard off-the-shelf product — each set of trusses is engineered and manufactured to your exact specification.

What is SANS 10160 and does Isocraft Truss comply?

SANS 10160 is the South African national standard governing structural design and loading calculations for buildings. All Isocraft Truss structural designs are prepared to SANS 10160 compliance using MiTek engineering software by our qualified Senior Structural Designer. Structural drawings are available for submission to your local authority and engineer of record.

Are your roof trusses suitable for commercial and industrial projects?

Yes. Isocraft Truss manufactures trusses for residential, commercial and industrial applications. For large spans we use MiTek Ultraspan lightweight steel trusses, which can achieve spans of 40 metres and beyond — ideal for warehouses, factories, schools, churches and retail centres.
